Fukuoka City, center of Kyushu’s government, economy, and transportation, aims to be a gateway to Asia. Here in this city, an international competition for architectural ideas will be held. This competition is also an effort to discover talented partners with whom we can build the future of Fukuoka.
Fukuoka City is a city of much appeal and potential, boasting the fastest-growing population among designated cities (2015), the highest proportion of young people (teens and 20s) among designated cities (2015), the highest number of ocean liner passengers in the country (2017), and the highest  rate of businesses opening and highest proportion of people who want to start or establish a business among designated cities (2018). *
Fukuoka’s vibrance can also be seen in the large-scale redevelopment of the Tenjin and Hakata areas. In the Tenjin area, the redevelopment project “Tenjin Big Bang” is underway, with a radius of 500 meters surrounding Tenjin Station. 30 private buildings are planned to be rebuilt by 2024, and the first project, Tenjin Business Center (temporary name) is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2021. Similarly, in the Hakata area, redevelopment covering a radius of 500 meters centered on JR Hakata Station is also underway, called “Hakata Connected”. 20 buildings are aimed to be rebuilt within a 10-year period.
It’s not just the city center that’s getting attention. There are many attractive areas nearby, one of which is Seaside Momochi. Seaside Momochi is reclaimed oceanfront land created about 30 years ago, and has grown to become an appealing location with a concentration of various urban facilities, such as homes, schools, hospitals, hotels, museums, libraries, commercial facilities, parks, and leisure facilities.
The Residential Suites Fukuoka, a hostel located in Seaside Momochi, will be the site for this competition. Though a little further from the subway station, the trend of MaaS (Mobility as a Service), which utilizes autonomous driving, has also become more active, and if infrastructure that realizes styles of life and work regardless of location is put in place, such as enhancement of IT-related services, high-speed data transmission, and shared offices, it has the potential to be developed even further as a third area after Tenjin and Hakata.
So, the theme this time is “Close to Work & Home—New Value to Working and Living: The Future of Seaside Momochi”.
Please consider the ripple effect on the Seaside Momochi area, created by the three aspects of “work” + “home” + “added value appropriate for Seaside Momochi”, their influence on one another and mutually increased value.
Please submit a proposal as you read into trends in society and the times, such as changing values in work styles, responding to shortages in human resources, and work and living environments desired by double-income households while raising children.
Let’s think about Seaside Momochi’s future, together.

• This competition is for the invitation of ideas only. Designs will not actually be built.
• The Residential Suites Fukuoka has no current plans for redevelopment.
