Profile: Seaside Momochi

In a location newly created by reclaiming what was once known as Momochi Coast, after the reclamation work was completed, the Asia-Pacific Exposition Yokatopia: Fukuoka Seaside Momochi Residential Environment Exposition was held (1989). The Momochihama district (between the Hii and Muromi Rivers)  and the Jigyohama district (between the Hii and Komo Rivers)  make up the area known as Seaside Momochi, where city facilities of every kind are concentrated, including detached housing, housing complexes, schools, museums, hospitals, offices, hotels, sports facilities, large-scale commercial facilities, leisure facilities, parks, and the sea (swimming areas).

The goal of Seaside Momochi’s development was to build a city that represented Fukuoka, which has lived harmoniously alongside the sea, while reflecting on post-war Fukuoka, which had been inclined to forget its connection with the ocean. Rather than use the land as an industrial area, which is typical of reclaimed land, it was built mostly of residential areas, with healthy homes bathing in the sunlight near the sea. In these residential areas, there are buildings designed by Michael Graves, Kisho Kurokawa, Yasufumi Kijima and more, built during the Fukuoka Seaside Momochi Residential Environment Exposition, known as the “Street of World Architects”.

In the center of the Momochihama district, there are cultural facilities, starting with Fukuoka Tower and including museums and libraries. The surrounding area features business facilities such as offices, as well as schools and hospitals. The Jigyohama district, designed to bring out Fukuoka’s individuality and vitality, has sports and recreational facilities such as Fukuoka Dome.

In addition, a green network has also been designed, which includes maintenance of a beach park and the reemergence of pine trees on the waterfront of Hakata Bay, as well as aiming for the continuity of roadside trees and onsite planting.

The throng of high-rise buildings has often been used as PR for Fukuoka City, and is recognized as a representative area of Fukuoka.

What We’re Looking For

Please submit a proposal following the items below.

Program

・Design a new neighborhood with work and home in close proximity.
・Plan about 70% of the total floor area to consist of “workspace” and “living space,” and about 30% to be “added value appropriate for Seaside Momochi.”
・With consideration for reality, specify either a design that uses up about 150% floor area ratio, or one that can be explained to create an image of its commercial potential.
・Consider a program that includes operators, users, how architecture is utilized, facility functions, and economics.

・Consider ripple effects on the neighborhood.

Format

You are free to create blueprints, perspective drawings, sketches, CG, model photography, etc. However, please title your work. Three-dimensional objects (anything with protrusions or unevenness) will not be accepted.

Language

Japanese or English
