英国の王立公園、ケンジントン・ガーデンに夏の間だけ姿を現すサーペンタイン・ギャラリー・パヴィリオン。設計者には、短い工期で公園の中に場をつくるという課題が課せられる。機能はカフェとレクチュア・スペースの2つのみ。このシンプルな条件だからこそ、設計者の思想や、理想とする建築のあり方が表れるのではないか。そうした期待を込めて、実現しなかった2004年も含めた、これまでの全作品を収録した。同じ敷地をプラット・フォームに、時を変え、設計者を変え、主題を変えながら、建築の転生が繰り返される世界に類を見ないこの試み。ザハ・ハディド氏による第1作目から藤本壮介氏による最新作まで、同スケールの図面と、彼らがパヴィリオンを通して実践したかったことを表す一文を作品に添えた。これまでの作品を総覧し、設計者のヴィジョンやこれからの建築を考えるヒントを読みとっていただければ幸甚である。
The Serpentine Pavilion makes an appearance every summer in the Kensington Gardens, one of London’s Royal Parks. The architects are required to create a temporary structure within a limited construction period. Since only a café and a lecture space are required by the brief, they are given ample freedom to express their ideas and ideals. All 14 projects, including the unrealized pavilion for 2004, are presented here to illustrate the rich variety of explorations.The array of architectural experiments by different architects on the same site provides a unique opportunity to gauge the ongoing transformations in architecture. From the first pavilion by Zaha Hadid to the latest one by Sou Fujimoto, the projects are presented with drawings of the same scale and a single phrase by each architect explaining the intent of the design.It is our hope that the reader could compare and understand the diverse visions of internationally active designers, and to further deduce ways of thinking about the future of architecture.
